The crises surrounding the Justice William Smith House has entered a new phase with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette taking up the cause of preserving the site. Two recent articles on their on-line service discuss the issue. The first article notes that a museum in Northern Ireland is interested in moving the historic Justice William Smith House to that part of the United Kingdom. As Len Barcousky notes in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:
” It was bad enough that the British government couldn’t stop Indian massacres on the Pennsylvania frontier, supporters of Justice William Smith say.
Now a museum in Northern Ireland with ties to Pittsburgh’s Mellon family is in talks to acquire Smith’s home in this Franklin County community and ship it to Europe.”
The article goes on to review the situation and the unique connection of the Smith House to Northern Ireland and why there is interest there in saving it.

Next, an editorial in the Post-Gazette this past weekend goes further and states that “We must save the Justice William Smith House”. Also, the editorial goes on to note that “Volunteer firefighters exist to preserve buildings and the memories they contain, not to destroy them.”
