Droop Mountain cleanup

The semi-annual Droop Mountain cleanup took place this past weekend in preparation for the reenactment weekend on October 11-12. About a dozen WVRA members and friends from the Stonewall Jackson Reenactment unit participated in what could have almost qualified as an episode of ‘Axemen’ (and women). A couple of dead standing and numerous fallen trees were dispatched with as many as 4 chainsaws going at anytime. Four dump truck loads of firewood were cut, split, and stacked for this year’s encampment. Park superintendent, Mike Smith said he would be splitting some more, so there should be no shortage for campfires. The WVRA also furnished a meal for the weary workers (they’re lumberjacks and they’re okay…)

After the work was finished a unit meeting was held and it was proposed and passed that preregistered military participants will receive a full pound of black powder. Not a bad deal for taking part in one of the better events in the state and certainly the most scenic.

Anyone interested in attending should check out the WVRA website or call Mark Tennant at 304-363-0935.
