This is a month late, but better late than never. The following is a quick summary of events we attended last year:
Our first event of the year was at Fort Indiantown Gap for the annual Battle of the Bulge Reenactment, sponsored by the WWII Historical Association. We take part in the Axis hospital living history presentation, with me portraying a wounded Volkssturman and Linda as a civilian volunteer. As always the hospital is a good educational experience for the many spectators who visit on Saturday.
In February, we attended a meeting of the 28th Infantry (Reenacted) group to which I belong, for the purposes of planning the coming year’s activities.
In early April, we attended ‘The School of the Longhunter’ at Prickett’s Fort State Park near Fairmont, WV. It is always a fun and informative event and seminar.
The Fort Frederick 18th Century Market Fair later in April was next on our agenda. Living history, shopping, shopping, shopping! Wooo hooo!
In May, I was asked to march in the Buckhannon, WV Memorial Day parade as a Revolutionary War militiaman. A few days later, at the Lantern Tour of the Grafton National Cemetery in Grafton, WV, I gave General Black Jack Logan’s speech directing the G.A.R. to decorate the graves of their fallen comrades in one of the first Memorial Day observances. This is a moving and well-attended memorial event. Hats off to Mark Tennant for organizing it and keeping it going over the years.
The Reading Airshow during the first week in June was next up, as we continued our busy year. A couple of weeks later, we made it up to Butler, PA for the Bantam Jeep Festival.
Next up in July was the Whiskey Rebellion Festival in Washington, PA. This event took place in the recreated Snyder’s Fort in Washington Park. there was more going on downtown, but we didn’t make it that far.
Later in July, we took part in the Timeline event at the Beverly Heritage Festival in Beverly, WV. This was a first time event and went quite well, overall. Camps from 1753 to 1945 were portrayed.
In August, we joined the guys in the 28th for a living history setup at the Brownsville, PA, Steam and Gas show.
In September, we went to England. No reenacting, but a bunch of history and some prehistory: Stonehenge, Salisbury Cathedral (which has an original copy of the Magna Carta) the Tower of London, Warkworth Castle, a Norman fort in Newcastle and the Imperial War Museum among others.
In October, we attended the WWII Living History encampment at Williamsport, MD. Another nice event. Cold as heck that day, though.
Native American Weekend at Prickett’s Fort in October. We took my granddaughters. Informative and fun.
November – Veterans Day Parade in Buckhannon, WV. Then, we attended the annual Eastern Front battle at Old Bedford Village, between the RKKA and Grossdeutschland with my unit, the 193rd Rifle Division.
And that is it for 2016. A busy year as usual. Sorry I didn’t make more posts throughout the year, but this is a one-man show. This should bring it all up to date! Looking forward to a good 2017.
Jim
