If you are passing by the local newstand this week, you might check out the latest issue of “America in WWII” magazine. Our intrepid traveling correspondent, Bill Donegan has an article published in the latest Issue. Titled “Luck Was On Our Side,” the article recounts the adventures of his uncle, Lester L. Call, who served in the 325th glider infantry regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division in WWII.
Bill’s uncle, like a lot of veterans, didn’t talk much about his experiences during the war, but after his death, Bill learned from his aunt that his uncle had “rode in D-Day combat in a Waco CG4A glider, sitting on a box of hand grenades.” During his military career, he served in the Italian campaign, the invasion of Normandy, and the Battle of the Bulge. The story goes on to recount other events that occurred during Mr. Call’s service in Europe, including sparing the life of a German soldier during the Battle of The Bulge, an act of kindness which had an unexpected and pleasant result in later years.
